While not many know this, some of the best psychological series on Netflix are based on books, even when in their releases they were among the most highly regarded on the platform, or in their case, in the literary market. Now, for those who love creepy storylines, mind games, and lots of detail, these are the best titles on the streaming platform.
The journalist
First of all, not all titles of the genre are made in Hollywood, and for example there is’The journalist’, a Japanese thriller series, loosely based on the book namesake written by Isoko Mochizuki. The story follows a reporter who gets involved in an investigation into a government corruption case and when powerful figures try to intimidate her, she wants to find out the truth.

From the mind of Todd Grimson, we have this 8-part miniseries called “Brand new cherry flavor’, one of the best psychological series on Netflix. The story is based on the novel of the same name and is about an aspiring director who meets a producer willing to help her, but he betrays her and she seeks a way to take revenge with a high price to pay.

And for those looking for something a little longer, there are the two seasons of “The Way of the Night”, a Belgian sci-fi thriller series created by Jason George. This psychological thriller is based on the novel The Old Axolotl by Jacek Dujak. The story is about a world where the sun kills those exposed to it and the crew of an airplane seek refuge in the dark.
Fragrance
Probably one of the best known novels on the list, ‘Fragrance’, based on the book of the same nameand that Netflix has turned into a series. The story doesn’t change much, and it’s about a group of friends who have hid a secret in the past, and now in the present a terrible murder threatens to unearth the case they have been trying to hide for many years.
The Hartung case
From Denmark comes this Nordic thriller called “The Hartung Affair”, a psychological series about kidnappings, deceptions and murders. The story is based on the novel by Søren Sveistrup, which in turn is inspired by the real case in which a detective investigates the mutilated body of a woman, linked to the disappearance of a local politician, and of a serial killer still at large.

Finally, based on the novel by Störst av allt, written by Malin Persson Giolito, this Swedish series has won numerous television awards in its home country. ‘Quicksand’ is about a student who has never had a problem, she is the prime suspect in causing a school shooting, which left several people dead and injured at the scene.
