Ultimately, a story can be made better or worse if you can leave what happened to everyone’s interpretation. And if it is true that some works that exploit that mystery to keep talking about it, there are horror film endings that are so open that to understand them it was necessary to explain them from their directors.
no
Director Jordan Peele’s most recent horror film, which many suggest may be among the best of the year. It is worth mentioning that in this as in the rest of the posts there will be spoilers. The ending of “No” ends up leaving open the possibility that Daniel Kaluuya’s character is still alive. At first, everything indicates that this is so, however, theories pointed out that everything was a sister hallucination of him (Keke Palmer). Peele allows any interpretation, but accepts that the closest thing is that he survived.
Mother!
Darren Aronofsky’s stories have always had multiple interpretations of their plots. ‘mother! ‘ has one of the most ambiguous endings in a horror movie. The story is about a couple who one day receives a visit from two people who begin to disturb their peace, while other invaders arrive. The tape was so criticized that Aronofsky came out to clarify the plot and thus killed the mystery. After all, it is an interpretation of the Bible, creation and the apocalypse.
Annihilation
Within the existential science fiction of ‘Annihilation’ there is a philosophical terror that the director, Alex Garland, did not deign to leave to interpretation. Eventually, Natalie Portman’s character reunites with her husband, played by Óscar Isaac, but when the two leave “The Shining”, it’s unclear whether they’re themselves or their doubles, but Garland explained the science behind “the Shining. error of God ”, which, in short, says that yes, they are their doubles.
Donnie Darko
There is no doubt that Richard Kelly’s film has earned its cult status for being cryptic and confusing at times. ‘Donnie Darko’ is a science fiction horror film with an open ending, which can be interpreted in several ways. Kelly had to release a later version that explained every mystery of the plot and, with it, explained so much that she left nothing to the imagination.
The Babadook
While some understood that “The Babadook” was not to be taken literally, others asked for an explanation for everything that had happened in Jennifer Kent’s horror film. In the story, a boy and his mother are tormented by a monster from a children’s story, without wanting to give too much away, the story makes sense when you realize it’s just a representation of different mental illnesses.
The lighthouse
another of those tapes horror movies that shouldn’t be taken literally are ‘The lighthouse’with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. The story follows two lighthouse keepers who have to take care of an old lighthouse in the middle of nowhere. The plot has its twists and turns that are left to the free interpretation of each, but Robert Eggers explains that the lighthouse is a metaphor for knowledge, which drives its protagonist crazy.
