It is intended as a reaction to the “Cobra Kai” phenomenon and the intention to harness the passion of a new generation of fans, but that does not shake the surprise that both followers and those involved in the universe of ‘Karate Kid’ have taken. Sony just announced that in 2024 we will see the return to theaters of “the original saga” with a new film that the studio did not want to give more details about. They just wanted to share its release date: June 7, 2024, but the details of its plot are still unknown.

Given the gossip used by Sony to confirm a new film, that one “return of the original saga”, it can be understood that the film intends to ignore the 2010 remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith; but beyond that, everything is still pending in relation to its possible connection with the current Netflix series, the aforementioned ‘Cobra Kai’. This television drama continues the story of the film trilogy we saw in the 1980s, noting karate champion Daniel LaRusso some 30 years after the original film. Thus, it is clear that those responsible for the series would have a lot to say before the unexpected announcement.
Jon Hurwitz, co-creator of “Cobra Kai”, was the first to react. He did it via Twitter making it clear that, deep down, they don’t know. “We would love to do the ‘Karate Kid’ and ‘Cobra Kai’ films and hopefully we will have this opportunity someday. But this film has nothing to do with us, nor does it develop around the protagonists of ‘Cobra Kai’. I don’t know much, but I wish you the best”. Netflix and Sony are two completely different houses, which is why Hurwitz didn’t know in advance. It remains to be seen whether the streaming platform and the studio will forge some sort of “collaboration” to make sure the story fits in and doesn’t suffer.
The kids and I would like to make movies about Karate Kid and Cobra Kai and hopefully someday they will. But this isn’t from us or focused on the cast of Cobra Kai. I don’t know much, but I wish him well. #Karate Kid #CobraKai https://t.co/pd2aYYAF0A

The anger of the fans
After the publication of Hurwitz, a creative who expressed his best wishes for the new movie “Karate Kid”, much less benevolent reactions can be read. It seems that “Cobra Kai” fans consider “disrespectful” that Sony has decided to give the green light to a new film completely ignoring the existence of the series that brought the Karate Kid universe back to the fore.
It’s great of you to feel that way, but fuck it.
You’ve taken an amazing streak and done some really amazing things with it.
How dare they pull something like this, Sony is the worst.

* “You’re honored to feel this way, but to hell with it. You’ve taken over an incredible series and developed it in an incredible way. How dare they do such a thing, Sony is the worst”.
I don’t even know how they can continue the franchise without involving Cobra Kai at all? It’s the only reason new fans find those movies and it’s what everyone will regard as the true succession of the original movies.

Cabbage. Talk about acceleration. I feel (at this point) that it’s a little disrespectful that they’re moving on with a Karate Kid Netflix movie, when Cobra Kai isn’t finished yet .. But I guess I’m crazy to think so?

* “Well, they were quick, what a fabric! Right now I think it’s a little disrespectful that they’re moving on with a “Karate Kid” movie.when ‘Cobra Kai’ isn’t over yet … But I guess I’ll be the fool to think so “.
