I am currently in the midst of replaying Smallville for the first time since it originally aired, and I’m also listening to it Talkvillea Smallville is about the podcast hosted by Tom Welling And Michael Rosenbaum. Each episode of the podcast features the first Smallville stars talking about an episode of the classic series. I am having fun and also love the experience of watching Smallville still!
One of the things I love Smallville it’s the beautiful relationship that Clark had with his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. That relationship is the key to the show and Clark’s evolution over the course of the series. Well, it turns out the Warner Bros. executive had a different idea for Clark and his parents than the creators. Miles Millar And Alfred Gough they found themselves fighting.
The studio wanted to present Jon and Martha Kent as disliking parents and they wanted Clark to hate them! This is such a terrible idea! Millar recently shared on the podcast:
“In the early days before airing, we had all of this as a behind-the-scenes politics with the net and people saying, ‘You know those parents should be a lot more antagonistic and he should hate the parents. And it’s just so much more of a Teenage cliché kind of a dramatic thing. And we really fought against that. “
What a bad creative choice. It’s a good thing Millar and Gough ultimately won and managed to present Jon and Martha in a positive light. Now, the relationship between Clark and his parents was certainly not perfect. He had his bumps on the road, but which family doesn’t? It’s a good thing that everything worked out in the end with Jon and Martha and that they were presented in a way that fans love and admire.
What are your thoughts on what the network executives originally wanted?
