The Goldbergs has been renewed for a tenth season at ABC and they are finally killing dad! It may seem like a weird thing to get excited about for people who don’t watch the show, but for fans of the comedy series, you know this had to happen for a while.

Last December, actor Jeff Garlin, who plays his father, Murray Goldberg, was fired from the series following a list of misconduct allegations against him. And instead of killing him right away, they used super weird CGI to wedge him into important scenes and ignored the fact that he was almost never around the rest of the time.

I understand it was bad timing as an actor Giorgio Segal, who played Pops in the series, had just died in real life and his character also died on the show. So it would have been strange to have two consecutive deaths, especially knowing that Garlin was alive. And they didn’t want to get their parents divorced because that wasn’t the trajectory of the characters. So they’re left with this inexplicable absence and a weird CGI dad in the wedding and graduation episodes. But in the end they are letting him go.

I honestly felt like the final episode of season 9 was well done and they could have stopped there. But if they’re moving on, Garlin just has to go.

When the show returns this fall, viewers will discover that the character of Garlin, the patriarch of the Murray Goldberg family, has been dead for several months.

Showrunner Alex Barnow tells it EW development:

“This is going to be a family that hasn’t reconciled the fact that the father is gone, but has moved on and gone through a lot of that. Let’s start with about optimism [Erica’s] child who comes and looks to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional foundation for the way people behave. “

Barnow adds that he has spoken to Garlin, who is “aware that he is not being replaced”. He continues:

“The truth is, I don’t know if he knows what his fate is, but I assume he does, that would be the answer to that question. We haven’t had a subsequent conversation since the beginning of writing that would have had specific clarity on this. “

The loss of Murray, coupled with the excitement surrounding Erica’s pregnancy, “feels like a big reboot for us,” says co-showrunner Chris Bishop. “We have a lot of momentum in this new season.”

Season 10 of The Goldbergs will be back on ABC on September 21 at (8: 30/7: 30c). Are you looking forward to the new season?
