National Cinema Day was proclaimed this Saturday 3 September. The Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit subsidiary of the National Association of Theater Owners, announced the event on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. National Cinema Day will take place this Saturday in more than 3,000 theaters across the United States, including around 30,000 attendees. It will be a one-day event that will see participating venues sell movie tickets at prices starting at three dollars.
Cinemas are hoping National Cinema Day will rejuvenate going to the movies during a fallow period, while creating excitement for the fall season release list. Organizers also reportedly described the initiative as a test for what could become an annual event. National Cinema Day marks the first cinema discount event of this magnitude in the modern era, incorporating competing theater chains and independent locations.
Cinema Foundation President Jackie Brenneman said in a statement:
“After returning to record-breaking cinema this summer, we wanted to do something to celebrate cinema. We are doing this by offering a “thank you” to the spectators who made this summer possible and by offering an extra enticement to those who have not returned yet. “
The event is also in line with the Labor Day weekend release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the funniest versionan extended edition of Marvel’s mega-hit of the latest holiday season, which grossed $ 804 million at the national box office.
UK cinemas have also organized their own National Cinema Day event, which will also take place on 3 September.
