‘Resident Evil’: Netflix cancels the series after just one season

Netflix canceled the “Resident Evil” series a month and a half after the premiere and after only one season. The adaptation of the popular video game Capcom arrived on the platform on July 14 and failed to retain its audience, which is why, as revealed exclusively by Deadline, the streaming giant has chosen not to give it a second season.

‘Resident Evil’: Netflix cancels the series after just one season

The news should come as no surprise considering the reception of the series from critics and audiences, as well as its dwindling interest after its first week on the streamer. ‘Resident Evil’ opened in second place, behind only ‘Stranger Things’. amassing a modest 72.7 million watched hours in the first week, but dropped out of the top 10 in the third week. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has 55% positive reviews, with only 25% of audience support and a dismal 3.9 / 10 on IMDb.

“Resident Evil” is developed by Andrew Dabb and loosely adapts the popular survival horror video games set in New Raccoon City in the year 2036, 14 years after a deadly virus caused the global apocalypse. The series stars Ella Balinska, Lance Reddick, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph and Paola Núñez. Núñez will soon be seen in another Netflix series, the adaptation of “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Mike Flanagan (“The Haunting of Hill House”).

And what about “Sandman”?

The long-awaited adaptation of the legendary Neil Gaiman comic premiered on Netflix on August 5 and received a very positive reception overall. Netflix typically waits about a month to announce if a series is renewed and canceled, and “Sandman” fans are already eagerly awaiting news. Gaiman himself has questioned his possible renewal citing its high production costs, but in a recent interview with Rolling Stone (via ComicBook.com) he gives hope to his followers by pointing out that the worldwide audience of the series has been very good in the weeks following its premiere and so it is “addressed” upon renewal.
