In 2018 with Kevin Hart it was the last time the Oscars had a master of ceremonies to use. Since then, the Academy has tried new and different things, such as splitting it into three blocks with three speakers (Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes) as it did this year or just letting the award winners take care of spicing up the night However, 2023 will be a return to basics and the new Executive Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Bill Kramer, teased in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that “definitely wants a presenter”.

“A presenter is very important to us, we are committed to having a presenter at the gala this year and we are already looking for some key names”Kramer said. The next Oscars awards ceremony will take place on March 12, 2023, but planning for the great American film festival is already underway: “We talked to ABC”the network that has been broadcasting the Awards for years, “And there will be some announcements soon, but we’ve had incredibly productive and engaging conversations with them.” It is clear that Kramer wants to straighten the audience figures for the gala which are lower every year, but also to restore dignity to those categories that have been removed from the main episode and are given in a separate and deferred ceremony: “We want to see all disciplines equally recognized in the program”Kramer said, “This is our goal. There are many ways to do it and we are working on it with ABC right now.” 2023 will be the 95th episode, a good time to reflect on “our evolving sector and our fans”, continues the director, “There are ways to do this that are fun and authentic and that are related to our mission to honor excellence in film.”
On the inclusion standards announced in 2020, Kramer said it’s not about “legislating on art”, but that the commitment to promote greater diversity and equality must be respected. For now, no decision has been made on the neutral categories, namely that the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress be eliminated and merged under the umbrella of the best performance as the Spirit Awards will do.
The Spanish candidates
As every year, the Film Academy of our country presented the three films nominated to represent Spain at the 2023 Oscars in the category of Best film not in English. These are ‘Alcarràs’, by Carla Simón; ‘Five Little Wolves’, first feature by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa; and ‘As bestas’, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s new film that will arrive in commercial theaters only on November 11 this year, although it has already been seen at the Cannes Film Festival.

Now it remains to wait until next September 13, when the Academy will announce the final candidate. Then another Academy, the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will choose the finalists for the Oscars. This award was first awarded in 1956 and Spain has taken it four times: with “Ricomincia da capo” in 1982, “Belle epoque” in 1993, “All about my mother” in 1999 and “The Sea Inside” in 2004.
