Searchlight Pictures has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming one Sam Mendes (American beauty, Revolutionary road, Fall of the sky, 1917) movie Empire of Light. The film is set in a British seaside town in the early 1980s and tells a powerful and touching story about human bonding and the magic of cinema.

The film has a wonderfully talented cast which includes Olivia Colman, Michele Ward, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hanna OnslowAnd Clarke crystal. The music for the film was also created by Trento Reznor And Ross Penthouse. It feels like a beautifully made love letter to the magic of movies and how they inspire us.

Here is the synopsis:

The Empire is the kind of cinema you don’t see often, framed by bright lights and a beautiful marquee, which kindly invites everyone into its red velvet seats. Hilary (Olivia Colman) serves in the front row, opening the theater every morning and overseeing an overflowing kiosk. Meanwhile, her manager (Colin Firth) occasionally calls her into her office for illicit favors. It’s a grim routine that she reluctantly repeats Hilary, but all of her colleagues acknowledge that she was much calmer from her when she returned to work after a long absence. When Stephen (Michael Ward) arrives as an eager new employee, the two form a quick, if seemingly unlikely, connection. Hilary hides a troubled past, struggling to manage her mental health, while Stephen, a young black man, grapples with rampant racism in 1980s Britain. Both wounded by assaults beyond their control, they find an escape and a safe haven in each other, but their relationship, like the Empire cinema itself, cannot last forever and soon the two will have to face the reality of their different future.

Empire of Light will premiere at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival this fall. Searchlight Pictures will then debut the film in select US theaters on December 9, 2022.
