Review: ‘Everything everywhere at the same time’ is a masterpiece with only its drama – A24 (Courtesy)
In recent years, the A24 production house has acquired such prestige that virtually all of its productions are something worth seeing. And never better say with ‘Everything everywhere at the same time’, a science fiction and fantasy film in its box, but with a very human drama at the center.
With Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Ke Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis, ‘All everywhere at the same time’ is the new movie “daniel”, Or also known as Dan Kwan and Daniel Sheinert, responsible for another fantastic spectacular comedy like ‘Swiss Army Man’ with Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe.
This time they bring ‘All everywhere at the same time’, a science fiction and fantasy film which had earned the acclaim of much of the critics and the specialized press at all the festivals and theaters where it was presented, which greatly raised my expectations across the skies.
But now that it’s hit mainstream theaters, I can say, without a doubt, ‘All everywhere at the same time’ It is one of the best films of 2022and a unique film that must be celebrated not only for what it represents, but also for making a story with these characteristics the most successful of the A24 studio.
What is “Everything everywhere at the same time” about?
The story of ‘Everything everywhere at the same time’ is divided into three chapters, and in short it is the drama of a Chinese family in the United States that has a small laundry, which is in danger because it cannot pay taxes. Meanwhile, the owners’ marriage begins to crumble, her father is about to arrive and her daughter introduces her girlfriend for the first time.
Later, and as the trailer progresses, madness comes into the story. First, it is revealed that Evelyn, the owner of the laundromat, superbly played by Michelle Yeoh, has the ability to jump from one universe to another, to take on the abilities of her other self to save her family from mysterious. dangers.
Unlike directors like Christopher Nolan, the “Daniels” visually present the rules of their film, that is, although there are dialogues explaining how they work, the application of these rules is done by the characters. And best of all, they work and, once understood, they are no longer detailed.
In this way, the respectable is taken for intelligent, and not someone to whom you have to explain what is happening every second for fear of getting lost in the plot. Putting that aside, ‘Everywhere Everywhere at the Same Time’ is a savage in every respect and does an incredible job of rhythm, showmanship and drama.
However, the most remarkable thing about “Everything Everywhere at the Same Time” is that it manages to mix different genres with a skilled hand, from action fights a la John Wick, to scenes that might be in a horror movie, and even then what stands out above all the human drama of its characters.
When on the surface it seems like the plot doesn’t make any sense, the more I think about it, “Everything everywhere at the same time” works thanks to its characters, who gradually empathize with them, understand their situation and understand their motives. That’s why, at the end of the plot, what matters is what happens to them, and not seeing which multiverses are the craziest.
There are those who have been involved in the publicity that “Everything Everywhere at the Same Time” deals better with the multiverse issue than Marvel, and while I agree with the idea, the most valuable thing about the film is what it tells. of us, our moment of existence and the value of each of the decisions that brought us where we are.
