‘Sandman’, the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s legendary comic, arrived on Netflix on August 5th and was quickly crowned one of the most viewed series on Netflix this year. And not only that, but its reach was also reflected on social networks, where the series dominated the social conversation in its first week on the streaming platform. Therefore, if ‘Sandman’ did so well, why hasn’t Netflix renewed it yet?

Apparently, according to Gaiman himself, all that success may not be enough if the series doesn’t reach specific figures with which to justify its high budget. In other words, “Sandman” faces stricter criteria than other low-cost series. So the well-known British author explained it to his followers on Twitter when a user told him he did not understand why the second season was not guaranteed, being the first the most viewed streaming series of the last two weeks:
“Because ‘Sandman’ is a very expensive show. And for Netflix to give us the money to do another season, it has to work incredibly well. So yeah, we were the most watched show in the world in the last couple of weeks. But that may not be enough”.

Knowing Netflix’s history of cancellations, which hasn’t hesitated to hack allegedly successful titles for failing to meet its demanding and immediate audience standards, Gaiman’s message is somewhat troubling. Netflix typically waits about a month after a series premiere to announce if it’s been renewed, so the next few weeks are key. Meanwhile, Gaiman encourages his followers to watch the series and watch it in its entirety: “Please encourage all your friends to watch ‘Sandman’. Encourage all your friends who have started watching “Sandman”, but have been distracted by life, to finish watching it”.

When they conceived the surprise episode
On Friday, August 19, two weeks after the premiere of “Sandman”, Netflix surprised its subscribers with the surprise premiere of an additional chapter of the first season, consisting of two stories (“A Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Caliope”) independent from the comics and with a total duration of 1 hour and 4 minutes.
Now, Neil Gaiman explained the process that led them to add a secret chapter and release it separately from the first batch: “It was the suggestion of [productor] David S. Goyer, and we immediately embraced her “reveals the author in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “We were about to present the project to streaming platforms and we decided it was going to be 11 episodes. We would do 10 and then there would be an eleventh, a special that no one would know anything about. It was what they knew they were buying. And it also meant that we could start the process of creating those stories very soon. “.
