The Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis (The help, Fences) is the latest star to join the cast of the anticipated prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. She will take on the role of Head Gamemaker Volumnia Gaul, in the ensemble led by Tom Blyth And Rachel Zegler.

Hunger games director Francesco Lorenzo is returning to the franchise to direct the prequel, based on the books by Susanne Collins. Michael Lesslie (Macbeth) wrote the most recent draft of the script, based on the work of Collins and Academy Award winner Michael Arndt (Catching fire).

The story “resumes with Coriolanus Snow (Blyth) at the age of 18, years before he became the tyrannical president of Panem, at a time when he is the last hope for his endangered lineage, a once family proud that she has fallen from grace on a post-war Capitol Building. As the 10th edition of the Hunger Games approaches, young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Zegler), the tribute girl from the poor District 12. After Lucy Gray gets Panem’s full attention by defiantly singing at the harvest ceremony, Snow thinks she might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Combining their instincts for showmanship and newfound political competence, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and who is a snake.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to hit theaters next year. Are you looking forward to this new story?
