Roberto De Niro is set to star in a new drama for Warner Bros. titled Wise guyswith Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Sleepers, Wag The Dog) direction.
Wise guys it is a period piece that tells the story of “Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, an Italian-American couple who led two separate criminal families during the mid-twentieth century. Genovese unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate Costello in 1957, although the latter ended up taking leave of the crowd after being wounded in the attempt on his life.
De Niro is rumored to be taking on both key roles in the film. This sounds like an interesting project for the actor and I’m curious to see how he behaves in bringing these mobsters to life.
The script of the film comes from Those good guys scribe Nicola Pileggiwho also wrote the 1985 book Wiseguy: Life in a mafia familywhich is Martin Scorsese’s book Those good guys is based on.
Wise guys looks like an interesting unexpected project for WB, which under the new president and CEO David Zaslav, who has cut and archived projects. He said he’s trying to push movies that will make money, but Wise guys it doesn’t seem to have the characteristics of a big tentpole movie that will make a lot of money.
Don’t get me wrong, I love mafia movies and this one looks like it could be great! But it’s not the kind of film that would appeal to a large audience. In any case, I can’t wait to watch it!
