Based on the original work written by Neil Gaiman and released by DC Comics in 1988, which would later move to the Vertigo label, “The Sandman” is the new Netflix adaptation, starring Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, one of the seven Eternals who lead this series.
Sleep
The protagonist of the plot, Morpheus, Dream or the King of Dreams, is played by Tom Sturridge in the series ‘The man of sand’ from netflix. Eternals are embodiments of different aspects of life, which are far more powerful and ancient than the gods. The dream governs everything that has no place in reality and takes on the appearance of a tall, pale man.
Death
Probably one of the most beloved characters of ‘The man of sand’ be Death or Death, portrayed by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and the second greatest among the Eternals. She is the only one of the brothers who has the power to travel freely between the realms, she represents the passage into the afterlife and she will be the last to leave the existence of the universe.
Wish
The embodiment of all that is desired, love, lust and hunger, Desire is one of the Eternals, an androgynous being who reigns in the Heart of the Realm of Desire, in a huge golden statue surrounded by clouds. Twin brother of Despair and sworn enemy of Morpheus or Dream.
despair
Desire’s twin sister, and the embodiment of despair and anguish, she is despair, portrayed by Donna Preston in ‘The man of sand’ from netflix. Sister of dreams, and one of the Eternals who reigns in a place of mirrors. She loads with a hook, described as having cold, clammy skin, even though she isn’t the first to take her place.
Destiny
Although he was nowhere to be seen during the first season of “The Sandman” on Netflix, Destiny is the eldest son of The Eternals and is the epitome of what was, is and will be. He reigns over the Garden of Fate and is often seen as a monk carrying a book chained to his arm, known as the Cosmic Document.
Destruction
Another one who did not appear during the first season of “The Sandman” was Destruction, one of the Eternals who has decided to leave his post and who represents the necessary transition from change to creation and life. He used to reign in reality and logic, but now he just wanders.
Delirium
Finally, the youngest of the Eternals is Delirium, although still older than existence itself. In Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman”, she is introduced as a girl of about 14, who constantly changes her hair color, visits her siblings more and rules the realm of madness.
