Marvel’s panel at Comic-Con 2022 left big surprises for fans of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, as official confirmation of his return to Disney + ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ series and this will also appear in “She-Hulk: Lawyer Hulka”, the series starring Tatiana Maslany for the same streaming platform. Of course, up until that point, its incorporation into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been with all the secrecy in the world and now, finally, Marvel Studios creatives can talk “freely” about Daredevil’s new role in the franchise.
In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, Kat Coiro, director of “She-Hulk”, expressed how relieved she is not to keep keeping the secret and wanted to create some expectation in the potential audience by making sure that the appearance of Daredevil (which is unclear if this is a cameo or will appear in multiple episodes) will be one of the things “Public Favorites”: “Yeah, Daredevil is on the show. I mean, how are you going to do a comedy about lawyers and Daredevil isn’t there?”.
What he can’t talk about in the interview is what Murdock and Jennifer Walters, Maslany’s character, know about each other, because “The Marvel Police is a real thing and they don’t want him arrested”; nor on whether or not we can expect a second season: “Only Kevin Feige can answer this question”Coirò says, “There is also the possibility that the character will join the other characters in the films. I have no idea. Seeing Bruce and Jen, She-Hulk and He-Hulk interact, you’ll definitely want to see more of their dynamic together. It’s a very playful big brother and little sister dynamic that has a lot of depth and people will definitely want to see more of it in the future. “

The female point of view
Coiro also said that although there were already several scripts written when she joined the series, she was the one who built them from scratch, thinking about tone, style and cast choice. Together with the director is screenwriter Jessica Gao, head of the team that wrote the entire series, two women for a story starring a woman, a milestone that although she is beginning to see more, still sounds extraordinary: “I hope this series is part of that movement where it is simply accepted that some productions are predominantly female, because this is life. It was definitely something we talked about, about inclusiveness and making sure the story was told to everyone. Through the lens woman. Comics have traditionally been, in art, told through the male gaze, so there has been a lot of talk about what the female gaze is. and how to create it from our point of view “. And it is that the protagonist is an intelligent and also powerful woman, who can kick anyone in the butt who annoys her on the street, which we all would like to dream of: “She-Hulk can walk home, even with headphones, and she doesn’t care, because she has the power not to feel physically vulnerable. And I think it’s something very unique that only a group of women could have contributed to,” among other things much more nuanced. […] Jennifer Walters doesn’t have to put up with that shit”.
As previously mentioned, in addition to Daredevil, we know that there is another hero involved in the She-Hulk plots: his cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who despite having experience becoming a green giant, the personal journey of both will be very different: “Bruce enters the scene after going through this very personal journey and has a partial idea that his experience will be exactly the same as hers and that he has a lot to teach her. But it quickly becomes clear that his experience will be very different, both physically. , literally and mentally, because of how they acted differently in the world as a man and a woman.I love to see Bruce completely get out of that game of thinking he’s the master and quickly realize that she has things to teach him. Additionally, it reflects on how anger is viewed differently in both genders, from reasonable anger to senseless hysteria: “Female anger is much less accepted than male anger. The level of anger accepted by society differs between men and women.”
And what does it mean to be a five-foot-eight green woman in her 30s who goes out in Los Angeles? This is what Coiro is asking himself and what he hopes the series will solve: “It’s just another aspect that shows this show is different from other Marvel shows, we can see what a superhero’s life is like behind the scenes. How you dress? What are you wearing for a date? How’s your house?”. She-Hulk: Lawyer She-Hulk will debut on Disney + on August 17th.
