The hybrid card game SOLFORGE: FUSION from Richard Garfield and Justin Gary will launch in September

This was announced by Stone Blade Entertainment SolForge: Fusion will be released this September 22 via game and hobby stores nationwide. The game was created by Richard Garfield (Magic: The Gathering) And Justin Gary (Ascension deck building game) and broke its crowdfunding goal by more than 1,200% (they were fully funded in under 26 minutes). SolForge: Fusion aims to be the first hybrid deck-building game that combines physical cards with a digital option. One aspect that is particularly interesting to me is that they claim that no two decks are alike thanks to “the unique card printing process generated by an algorithm”. The idea is that this will remove the concept of netdecking (searching and copying decks on the Internet) which is sure to appeal to me. Speaking of this idea, Gary said:

SolForge Fusion represents the culmination of over a decade of development by Richard [Garfield] and me to create a great game different from the others. Players can customize truly unique decks to create a unique and compelling experience every time they play, in person or online.

The way SolForge: Fusion it works is that you take two half decks and combine them into a complete deck and play from there. You can use your physical cards at in-person events or scan your deck into the online database for use online Tabletop simulator. Not only can you combine decks, but you will also combine cards. Garfield shared:

The combination of two procedurally generated half decks offers an easy way to customize your deck and vastly expands the possibilities of a collection. And card making by merging two halves together offers over 15,000 cards possible in the first set alone, more than those created in the first 20+ years of Magic: The Gathering!

It looks fantastic! I would like more trading card games to follow this digital use card scanning example. If you’re headed to Gen Con, you can check out the events in person, including tutorials and tournaments SolForge: Fusion.
