Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of my favorite movies of the year. It’s just such a damn good movie, and it was so good to watch Ke Huy Quan back in action after all these years! Quan was a child actor from the 1980s who hasn’t made films since he was a child. One of his most recognizable roles is the character of Short Round Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Well, it turns out that Everything Everywhere All At Once directors Daniel Kwan And Daniel Scheinert it actually sought to include Quan’s iconic Short Round character in the movie!
The Daniels give audio commentary of the film on the DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD edition and that’s where they share how Short Round would be included in the film.
Quan plays Waymond Wang, the husband of Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) and explains the multiverse to her. There is a flashback montage in the film of how the characters met as children and fell in love. Kwan talked about this scene, saying:
“This sequence was a fun revelation. Basically, we could take a science fiction presumption that it’s someone scanning someone’s brain for their life memories and in the same movement, you’re also getting their full life story. So it’s like a little science fiction with a little bit of character backstory in it.
Scheinart added:
“It was a real ah-ah moment when we came up with this scene. Oh wow, now we can anticipate everything that will happen next, all the regrets of Michelle’s character and all the relationships.
It is in this sequence that the Danielis wanted to try to include Kwan’s Short Round in the film, but ultimately failed to effectively achieve the de-aging effects. Scheinarts explained:
“Right there for young Waymond, did we spend a while thinking that we can somehow trace Key Quan’s childhood face on that actor and make him look like Short Round? It did not work. It was too much work and it wasn’t worth it. “
It would have been fun to watch, but in the end it’s okay that he didn’t make it into the movie. It was still a damn great movie! You should check it out if you haven’t seen it yet!
