The first of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’continues to set great records and this time around is the highest-grossing Paramount + film in the United States. Originally the title was James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’, but has now moved on to the Tom Cruise starring movie which has become the big phenomenon of 2022.
Even if the sequel to “Top Gun”‘was expected by many, no one imagined the great impact it would have once it hit the big screen. Against all odds, the film managed to shine at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and has since been listed as a favorite of the year, once it hit theaters, it has surprisingly blown the box office.
The tape has become highest grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career, and was also positioned in the top 25 highest-grossing films internationally. Now it adds a new title to its story, as it has managed to position itself as the best-selling Paramount Pictures film at the US box office.
According to data released by Box Office Mojo, ‘Top Gun: Maverick ‘is Paramount’s highest-grossing film in the United States getting $ 601,921,389.00 dollars, only in theaters of that country. This figure exceeds the $ 600,788,188.00 that “Titanic” had achieved with its premiere in ’97.
It remains to be seen whether the Tom Cruise film manages to break the absolute record of the ‘Titanic’which raised $ 2,201,647,264 million dollars internationally. However, it should be taken into account that this figure was reached because after its premiere in 1997, it was raised three more times and everything that was collected was also counted in the total amount. So it might be a little impossible to get there, but with the surprises it gave ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, it can happen.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and Tom Cruise’s legacy in the skies
In the late 1980s, ‘Top Gun’ was released, the first film in which Tom Cruise was seen atop a US Army plane to tell a dramatic action story. The film was very successful in theaters with the public and, moreover, the critics applauded it, to the point that it became a classic of that decade.
Forty years later, the story was revived with a sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick”. Nobody asked for it and very few expected it, but in the end it managed to exceed everyone’s expectations by bringing Tom Cruise back into his role as an aviator but within a much more mature setting than the one seen in the Eighties. The success was total and surpassed its prequel.
Now, hopefully the dramatic story of heights can continue with a third installment, but so far there is no sign that this will happen. Meanwhile, there is also the hope that the film will enter the Paramount + catalog for all those who have not been able to see it.
