Wyatt Russell made his big debut in the MCU as John Walker aka US agent in Marvel’s The hawk and the winter soldier last year. We have no idea when we will see the character again and, at the moment, Russell is just waiting for the call from Marvel.
With Captain America 4 In the midst of development, the actor was asked in an interview with Collider when he’ll be back, why he should appear in the next Captain America movie. He responded by saying:
“No, you never know. They do a really great job of keeping the secret. It’s part of the charm. You always hope you can come back and you hope to get the call. If I pick up the phone and it’s Marvel on the other end of the line,” you say, ‘Okay, good. Let’s go to work.’ “
Russell went on to talk about his fitness and how he lost all the muscle he gained to play the character for the first time. So when he comes back, he’ll have to get back in shape. He said:
“As for Marvel’s secret training camp, it was two and a half years ago, or almost three years ago no, that we really enjoyed filming. [The Falcon and the Winter Soldier]. All the training and everything I’ve done, if I get the call, it’s going to take a lot of track to get back into shape that way. I’ve lost every ounce of muscle and physique I had, but that’s the fun part. Honestly, that was also an important part of taking on the role. “
The actor went on to talk about what he hopes to see from the character as his story arc continues, saying:
“I haven’t really even thought about, if the character comes back, what I hope it becomes. There are so many different ways you can go with it. I just hope that whatever it is, it continued on this line of this struggling with yourself. This is something I can do, as I think it needs to be done. As long as he has that conflict within him, he can change his mind and can go through therapy. There are many different ways you can go. I just hope it goes one way interesting, but in a way, it’s not up to me. “
Russell actually nearly turned down the role and explained that it was due to the pressure of playing Captain American:
“I hear every actor say that, but at first I was very hesitant. If you were a fan of Loggia 49, you weren’t saying ‘This guy is going to play Captain America’. I had the same reaction. I was like, ‘Are you sure you want me to play Captain America?’ You don’t know what you’re auditioning for, so I was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to go audition and see what it’s all about if I get it.’ And then, I figured it out and I thought, ‘Okay, great. Who am I playing? ‘ I had a meeting with [The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director] Kari Skogland and Zoie Nagelhout at Marvel, and they showed me a picture of Captain America. At first I thought, ‘Oh, my God.’ Captain America is a very difficult character to play because his moral compass always points north.
“He’s a tough character to play. And when you have someone who was that good at it, just do it, who’s so loved, you’re saying, ‘I don’t want to play that guy. They’re impossible shoes to fill. No. Absolutely not. I’m not your boyfriend. ‘ And then they would say, “No, no, no, it’s this other character.” He turns into this Captain America anti-Captain America and the weird world. When we started talking about it, I thought, “Okay, I can have some. owned on this character because I can make him what I want, in a certain way. “They gave me the leeway to really do it and they impressed us. The work experience was fantastic because they really listened and took into account the ideas that you had. I hope to present ideas that are concise and clear, so that I wasn’t creating any confusion. I ran with the character and was really happy with how it turned out. They gave the character some pathos and he was an interesting character in the “MCU that has never been done before. It’s always great to do someone who has never been done before because you can really put a mark on it. I had a great time. It’s great to work with them.”
Russell suited this role so well, he was so unpleasant as a character, and that was the point! It will be fun and interesting to see how the character continues to grow and evolve in the MCU.
Since collaborating with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Val, what would you like to see from the US agent as her story continues?
