We’ve got through the intense fourth season of Stranger things almost, but not completely, unscathed. With the loss of a fan favorite newcomer weighing on our hearts, we also have the very critical future of Max to worry about. But we should consider ourselves lucky that Max is in the current state of him, as the first draft of the fourth season was originally much more final.
In a recent interview with Netflix Geeked, Ross Duffer said:
“[Max’s death] was discussed as a possibility. For a while’ is what would have happened. We wanted to do away with a bit more of a question mark at the end of the season, where it’s still really dark and we don’t know if Max will be okay … We don’t really know. We wanted to leave it on hold to move forward into season 5. “
Max is the last of Vecna’s four victims whose death triggered the apocalypse, turning Hawkins into the hellish portal of the Upside Down, which sets the stage for the fifth and final season of Stranger things. But unlike the other victims, Max was able to be returned, at least to the comatose state we last saw her in.
Matt Duffer he continued talking about the season, explaining:
“This season, we’ve always wanted ours [Star Wars] The empire strikes again season. We tried a little with 3but this is really doubling the idea of - at least 3 it has a sad note, there is a sacrifice, but they have defeated the evil, or at least they have rejected it for a while. While with this, we wanted them to really lose. We wanted our characters to experience how it felt.
“This was the great idea that was born 4, that they would lose and we will present Vecna, and they will lose to him. This would mean preparing our characters for what will be the last final confrontation with Vecna, with Upside Down, which will be the fifth season. “
I have a feeling we’re going to see a lot more death and destruction before the show ends, and that’s a shame. But I know the story is in good hands and I love what the Duffers have done so far. Seasons 1-4 of Stranger things are available in their entirety now on Netflix.
