Part 2 of Stranger things Season 4 fell over a week ago, and fans reeled from the roller coaster ride that was the last two big episodes. The story took us in different directions, across states and even around the world, but in the end there was a great reward and everything set us up for the fifth and final season.
One aspect of the story that was thrown out there for fans, but never fully addressed, was the Upside Down timestamp. When the group that included Nancy, Steve, Robin and Eddie were in the Upside Down looking for weapons to fight Vecna, Nancy looked at her diary in her alternate dimension bedroom and realized that her last entry was three years earlier. , the day Will disappeared. When she got caught, she stopped time in Upside Down. This was revealed to viewers, but it was never fully explained or revisited, so in a recent interview with Deadline, the Duffers touched on it, with Ross saying:
“We really wanted to give the audience a lot of the great answers. Some question marks still remain. The biggest is that we set up in the finale of the first volume how Upside Down is locked in time on the day of Will’s disappearance. It’s something we don’t answer in volume two, and that’s really the key point of the plot, the key question that will guide our final season as we try to wrap up this story and provide the rest of the answers.
Matt went on to say:
“We knew it was going to be the penultimate season and so we were able to do a lot of things we weren’t able to do before, like the four-door collision. We always wanted the Upside Down to invade Hawkins more massively. We hinted at it a bit in Season 2, but we want a full blown upside-down invasion, and it’s something you can’t just rewind onto that.
Ross added:
“Yes. Once that happens, there is no going back. So, you can really only do it so deep into the story.
So they were just laying the groundwork for the final season. You could tell from Will’s reaction in the final scene that he could still feel that connection with the Upside Down, and he knows something big is coming. I’m so nervous about these characters as they face the biggest battle of their life. I know it’s going to be epic and I can’t wait to see what the Duffers have in store to wrap up the story big.
