Johnny Depp will return to the big screen after his famous trial of Amber Heard. He will do it through the French film ‘La Favorite’, directed by Maïwenn, where he will embody the figure of the king of France Louis XV. Maïwenn herself will play in the film in the role of Jeanne Bécu, Countess of Barry, the last official mistress of Louis XV. Filming will take place over the next three months in the city of Paris and is expected to hit French cinemas in 2023.

In the beginning, information emerged assuring that Netflix would finance part of the production. In the end it won’t be like that the well-known streaming platform has acquired the rights to broadcast it on Netflix France only after the 15 months corresponding to the exclusive distribution window at the cinemaVariety relationships. On the other hand, it is not yet known whether the film will be available for the rest of the countries.
The return after the trial
It will be Depp’s first film since his high-profile libel trial against Heard. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star sued his ex-wife for libel when she wrote an article for the Washington Post in 2018 in which, not to mention Depp, she recounted her experience with a public figure who represented domestic abuse. On June 1 of this year, the jury ruled in Depp’s favor and sentenced the “Aquaman” actress to pay $ 10 million in damages and $ 350,000 in punitive damages to her ex-husband..
After his controversial departure from “Fantastic Beasts”, Depp had only appeared in a couple of smaller films.
