The 2019 reboot of “Hellboy” was directed by Neil Marshall and Davide Porto in the main role with the big red monster. However, even before the release of the film, the actor sensed that, far from achieving success with this film, he would run into a major failure and to ask for advice on how to take it, he decided to call Ryan Reynolds.

In interview with GQ for the premiere of ‘Stranger Things’ season 4 volume 2, where he plays Jim Hopper; the actor talked a little about his bitter experience with rebooting ‘hell boy’. While he was very enthusiastic about the project, he saw coming up that it would not have the impact that everyone in the production was looking for and that, in fact, the answer already seemed rather negative.

The idea of creating a new adaptation of Hellboy was born because he is a very popular comic book character and also because the first two films that Guillermo del Toro made with Ron Perlman were very successful. However, prior to the release of the film, David Harbur realized that the film would not have the same effect and that, in fact, it could face failure.

It was a very difficult experience because I wanted so much from her. I like it a lot, I like that character. And then right away when it started, even when it was announced, I realized that people didn’t want that character reinvented, “she said.

This scenario reminded him of Ryan Reynolds, who had starred in ‘Green Lantern’, one of the most criticized DC Comics films in the story, where the actor was heavily chosen for his performance as he had never experienced it before. Having experienced something she saw coming for him, she decided to contact him and seek advice.

I called him and said: Hey, I just need to know something. Been to Lanterna Verde? Big flop for you. What the hell is that? Because I think I’m going to hit it right now. I will be OK? Will I survive this? ”He confessed.

Although the actor did not share what kind of words of encouragement from Ryan Reynolds being able to deal with the situation; if he had confessed that the ‘Free Guy’ protagonist was completely “sweet” with him and all the environment around him for ‘Hellboy’.

Critics and box office hated “Hellboy”

David Harbor’s intuition didn’t fool him: as soon as the reboot of “Hellboy” hit theaters, it became one of the biggest flops in history. The entire production received very strong criticism, both from film and television experts, as well as fans of the famous character and the general public.

On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a paltry 9% rating; while at the box office it did not even reach what they used as the budget to bring the whole project to life: they grossed more than forty million dollars and had invested 50 million dollars. Currently, “Hellboy” is on Amazon Prime Video.
