Contains SPOILERS for the third season
Episode 7 of “The Boys” Season 3, “A Candle to Accompany You to Bed”, premiered on Prime Video on July 1, has left comic fans even more crazed than “Herogasm”. The chapter brought with it an unexpected revelation, a twist that further distances the series from the pages created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson: Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) is Patriot’s (Antony Starr) biological father. The surprise comes in the last few minutes, when Starr’s character gets a call from Soldier Boy to tell him the truth about his past: “In 1980 I was called by the Vogelbaum laboratory for an experiment related to genetics”explains, “I came on a boat, and apparently Vogelbaum created a baby who was born in the spring of ’81, a boy. You know what the fuck that is? That if they hadn’t rejected me, I would have let you be the center of attention. What a father You wouldn’t want that for your son. Was this plot twist planned from the start? According to Eric Kripke, showrunner of “The Boys”, no.
In an interview with Variety, Kripke explained that the idea came to them late, already at a good point in the season, forcing them to have to redo some parts, and that it was born from various conversations about the parental and family conflicts that other characters have to. face up to: “And the [razón] obvious, that is, Soldier Boy was like the first Patriot. So there is a logic in him being the father of the current Patriot. “Kripke says, “But it was more about slowing down a bit and paying attention to the season’s themes as they evolved. And really, in a lot of ways, this season is about fathers and sons. It’s about how fathers can pass on their trauma, generationally, to their children, especially this toxic police masculinity that their children must be the social version of the masculine. All these themes fluctuate and it all ends in these stories from father to son. We are talking about Hughie (Jack Quaid) and his father, the Butcher (Karl Urban) and his father, the Butcher and his son, Patriot and his son. It wasn’t the plan from the start, but as we were talking about the mythology of the season, someone threw it out and said, “Crazy idea, but what if …?” And I jumped on him, like “Sure”. Since many of our main characters are dealing with problems with their parents and parents, even Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Patriot should be dealing with his father. So everything fits. “

As those who have read the comics know, not only is Soldier Boy not Patriot’s father, but they have sex in Herogasm, a storyline that the series has now eliminated for even more obvious reasons. Kripke tells in the interview that he received messages after the airing of that episode accusing them of not having the courage to question that gay scene, to which he can now reply that no one would have had problems, worse of course: “There’s this thing in history that I’m father and son, that’s why we didn’t.”.
surprise for everyone
But the surprise of this change wasn’t just for the fans, nor did Ackles see it coming, as he explained to Variety: “I just thought the only connection between them was that they were contextualized the same way, that Soldier Boy was the original Patriot and they got in the way and replaced it with a newer, brighter version of the same thing. In no way, shape or form I thought there was a real blood connection. So it left me speechless. “ The third season of ‘The Boys’ ends on July 8 with the airing of the eighth episode that promises to be up to the task: “We see that fight that not only Soldier Boy but Patriot is facing with that information bomb. Basically Soldier Boy has some tough decisions to make. He promised Butcher he would help him, but things have changed.”Ackles adds.
