The live action of “Barbie” could fulfill the slogan: “You can be what you want to be” – Courtesy (Warner Bros)
So far, the only thing that has been revealed about the “Barbie” live action is that Greta Gerwing is its director, Warner Bros is its producer and much of its cast, led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Little is known about its history, however, since it has only been anticipated that it will be a romantic comedy … which could do justice to the famous Mattel doll slogan: “You can be whatever you want to be.”
Since Barbie was launched on the toy market in the 1950s, she has done so accompanied by a slogan that the world has not forgotten to this day and which accompanies many childhoods: “You can be whatever you want to be”. A phrase that encourages the little ones of the house to seek their dreams as a doll has realized it in its many versions: doctor, teacher, housewife, veterinarian and much more.
It is precisely this iconic phrase from Mattel that could give essence to the doll’s live action film and due to the leaks that have emerged in recent weeks, it would not be unreasonable that this concept can really be brought to the big screen with this production.
The images and videos leaked from the recordings of this film have revealed the protagonists, Margot Robbie as BarbieY Ryan Gosling as Ken; in a variety of outfits that allude to the indisputable versatility of the characters: there is a classic and a modern version of toys; a western with cowboy and a very retro one with everything and roller skates.
IS variety of “personalities” in the characters of the live action of “Barbie”., they fit the doll slogan perfectly. Therefore, there would really be hope that the production of Greta Gerwing with Warner Bros, ends up taking into account this great motto for the development of the story of her as a romantic comedy.
Barbie, more diversity in more than one version of the dolls
On the other hand, the variety of outfits that have been seen in the film’s leaks aren’t the only ones explaining a diversity in its history where the motto “you can be who you want to be” gains strength. In fact, there is another factor that this concept would also enter: the rumor about a possible “Barbieverse” where there are different versions of the protagonists.
During the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, the theory surfaced that Barbie and Ken would be played by more than one actress and one actor respectively. While Issa Rae and Hari Nef would give life to other versions of the doll; Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa would become other versions of the doll.
This entry would also give space to show that people “can be what they want to be” in real life and moreover, I’d bet on breaking stereotypes that are out of the typical “Barbie Girl”; and that really give more strength to the diversity for which this slogan remains valid today.
