We are used to seeing series simply as fiction, but perhaps at some point we realize that a specific space is familiar to us, as if we have seen it before. Series such as ‘La casa de papel’, ‘Elite’, ‘Valeria’ or ‘Las Chicas del Cable’ have left their mark in different parts of the city of Madrid, and Netflix has partnered with SANDEMAN to offer free tours to some of these places in the capital, as well as in Paris and London, from 11 to 17 July this year.

Some may not be easily accessible, as in the case of the RIU hotel in Plaza España, where the tour begins. At the top of the building is a small bridge on which some of the characters from “Elite” in its fourth season have been placed. It is a walkway with glass fences that gives the feeling of being suspended in the air, but at the same time gives us a wonderful view over the city. ‘We were songs’, with María Valverde and Álex González, and ‘Valeria’, with Diana Gómez and Maxi Iglesias were also filmed in this impressive hotel. The latter had one of her most iconic scenes here, when the protagonist and her three friends observe the city from the bridge. One of the actresses even coped with her dizziness to shoot this shot.

We continue with the tour and find a place that will sound much more familiar to us: Plaza de Callao. If you come from Madrid, you will easily recognize this place and also if you are a fan of “La casa de papel”. It is one of the most successful series on the platform globally. Although the filming took place in around 300 locations in 7 different countries, it was in the center of Madrid that one of the most famous scenes of the series was shot in which the Professor and his team made money rain from the sky. However, it wasn’t easy, as bad weather was a major obstacle for the film crew. And if anyone wonders how they managed to print such a lot of bills, they used ABC newspaper presses and lots and lots of newsprint.

From the screen to the streets

Other places are located in the Gran Vía area, where we will enter the glamor of the 50s and the evolution of the film industry in the capital. Also noteworthy is the Telefónica building, where the protagonists of ‘The cable girls’ worked, a series about four women who became operators at the headquarters of the national telephone company in the 1920s. In addition, it is the first Netflix series Made in Spain. We also have the Chueca neighborhood and square, the heart of the 1980s Movida Madrileña, with the undisputed figure of Pedro Almodóvar; and, on the other hand, the Plaza de la Memoria Trans, where other scenes of ‘Valeria’ were filmed.

The guided tours organized by Netflix and SANDEMANs will take place in the week from 11 to 17 July. Its duration will be about 2 hours and, in addition, it will be completely free. Now you can book a seat for one of the visits
