Among the many recognized works that Netflix has in its catalog, there are many that are films based on real events that have been acclaimed by critics and audiencesmanaging to conquer their entire audience for the way in which they decided to tell real experiences that now transcend in cinema and streaming.
Mank
Among the most acclaimed films of 2020 is ‘Mank’, a Netflix original production directed by David Fincher that won three Oscars out of ten nominations. The real story that conquered everyone in this film was that of Herman J. Mankiewicz, played by Gary Oldman, who dedicated himself to the screenplay of the well-known film ‘Citizen Kane’.
Tick, tick … boom!
Another of the biographical films which managed to leave an echo in the audience and the criticism is ‘Tick, tick … bom!’, also a Netflix original. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film brings to Netflix the true story of Jonathan Larson, played by Andrew Garfield, the famous composer who marked the theater in the nineties, being one of the great inspirations of the sector.
Schindler’s List
A classic of cinema is without doubt ‘Schindler’s List’ by Steven Pielberg, which has been one of the most acclaimed throughout history for the way he managed to portray World War II through a true story, that of Oskar Schindler. Liam Neeson plays this businessman who managed to save thousands of Jews from the Holocaust by making them work in his factory.
The pianist
Like “Schindler’s List”, there are others films based on real war events who have also managed to fascinate critics and the public for the empathic way in which they tell raw real experiences. This is the case of Roman Polanski’s “El Panista”, where he is brought to the screen as Wladyslaw Szpilman (Andrien Brody) lived during the Second World War, as a Polish and Jewish musician.
The Chicago trial 7
Among the films based on real Netflix original events that audiences and critics alike have loved the most is Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7”. In this film, the story of one of the most mediatic and controversial trials in Chicago is known: that of seven protesters against the Vietman war who fought against the state in order not to be arrested for demonstrating and for being victims of a racism system.
Room
While ‘Room’ is quite inspired by real events, it is part of this list because in addition to taking a true story and adapting it, it was one of the most critically and publicly acclaimed that Netflix has. In it it is shown how a young woman and her son try to live in a room, the one in which her father placed them after having kidnapped her; a story inspired by the Fritzl case.
