That visual feature above Drew Struzanthe classic poster for John Carpenter’S The thing it was a staple of my childhood. Even though I was too young to see the film at the time, the look of that poster as a kid haunted and intrigued me. My parents had a poster of it and as a child I slept in an oversized shirt with that image on it. I look at this poster and many memories of my childhood come to mind.

If you are a fan of The thing and this epic poster, you will be happy to hear that Struzan has collaborated Vicestampa to release an officially licensed screenprint of the original artwork for the film’s 40th anniversary.

Vice Press explained: “When we produced the lenticular versions of Drew’s The thing last year, we had a huge outcry from people who wanted the poster to be available as a screen print. As this year marks the 40th anniversary, we felt what a better time than now to settle! With this, we worked with Drew Struzan and his team, Sep Lab and End Hymns, under license from Universal Studios, to produce an official 24 × 36 screen printed version of this fantastic poster. ”

Struzan previously talked about the creation of art saying:

“It was a very strange experience. I had an immediate idea, which was not unusual for me; I usually have something in mind. I dressed in a winter snow suit and my wife took a Polaroid of me. It was 30 years ago, in the stone age, when the only way to communicate a hundred miles away was by telephone or fax. So I did the drawing and faxed it to the studio and they said, ‘Okay. We need it by tomorrow morning. ‘ I went to work. We stopped for a moment and I took more photos with my wife, this time with a 35mm camera. She developed the film for me and I started drawing, then painting for the rest of the day, then painting for the rest of the night. At 9 in the morning a boy shows up at my door and says: ‘Is the painting ready?’ I had about an hour, so I finished painting it and he took it away. Since then he has traveled more than I have. [Laughs] He’s been around the world many, many times. “

The Drew Struzan Thing will be available exclusively from Vice Press and is available in two versions, a poster edition of the timed 24 × 36 film, along with a limited edition 24 × 36 inch foil art print. Each print will be available from 6pm BST on Tuesday 21st June. The timed edition will be available until 6pm on Tuesday 28 June.
