Guillermo del Torois the long-awaited interpretation Frankenstein has finally come out of the shadows with a brand new teaser, offering the clearest look yet Giacobbe Elordi like the iconic Creature.
Following the release of character portraits that gave fans their first full look at Elordi’s chilling transformation, this latest social media spot reveals new footage that captures both the horror and pain of the story’s tragic creation.
The teaser opens with the disturbing phrase: “All men hate the wretched; how, then, should I be hated, who am more miserable than any living being!”
In contrast to the clunky, boxy image popularized by Boris Karloffthis version of the Monster comes closest to Shelley’s description as a being at once disturbingly human and profoundly alien.
The new footage shows a pained and self-aware rather than purely monstrous creature, embodying the internal torment found at the heart of Shelley’s novel.
Elordi recently spoke about his transformation and physical journey to becoming the Monster. “There are so many different layers to the costume. When he’s born, he’s wearing almost nothing. His chest is open and his head is high. Then, when he starts to feel pain, like we do as teenagers, he starts to hunch his shoulders. And as an adult, he shuts down.”
He went on to describe the immersive process of filming under del Toro’s meticulous direction. “You throw away time when you make a movie like this. I stopped having a watch and just waited for the SUV to arrive. That meant it was time to go. I didn’t eat breakfast, lunch or dinner, or think in terms of morning, afternoon, evening. It was just one time.”
In Frankenstein, Oscar Isaac plays Victor, the brilliant but arrogant scientist who creates life only to destroy it through his own obsession and guilt. The dynamic between Isaac’s tortured creator and Elordi’s wounded creation seems to be the emotional core of del Toro’s adaptation.
For del Toro this film represents something deeply personal. “This film concludes a quest that began at the age of 7, when I saw it James Balena’s Frankenstein film for the first time. I felt the jolt of recognition in that pivotal moment: Gothic horror became my church, and Boris Karloff my Messiah.”
Frankenstein is currently screening in select theaters for a limited time ahead of its global debut on Netflix on November 7.
