Yu-gi-oh! TCG announces the format of new Genesys

Yugi-Millenials and Duelists Yugi-Gen Z, cheers? I was thinking about my business the other day when I saw the news that Konami announced a new alternative format for the Yu-gi-oh! TCG called Yu-gi-oh! Genesys.

While you can go to the official announcement of Genesys, I intend to break down things in the best possible way to help you understand what we know starting from the four fundamental rules.

First of all, Genesys uses everyone Yu-gi-oh! TCG cards except for the pendulum monsters and connection monsters. Secondly, there is no prohibited and limited list. Technically all the cards that are not a pendulum nor the connection monsters are legal.

Third, the decks are built using a points system. Fourth, the standard point limit will be 100 points, but the official tournaments stores can organize events in any point they want (including 0!).

If pendulums and connections offend you but Synchros and Xyz are fine (sorry for the boomers Yugi), this format looks like a dream! Now, if you have a favorite archetype that does not fall into prohibited mechanics, perhaps it will actually be able to shine in Genesys. Another detail is that there will be no pendulum areas or extra-monsters again showing again in the fields pre-piercing it.

Now let’s talk about the points of points and the Mazzo building. As mentioned above, the standard point limit will be 100 points, but what it actually means. Well, as currently, there are 505 cards that have a point value between 1-100. All the other cards in the format are worth 0 points! Konami has a website to help you look for cards and build decks, but it is currently in early access and as far as writing does not really work (probably due to high traffic).

However, the original format page has a table of 505 cards and their values. For example, the greed pot will cost you 30 points per copy while the dark dragon of the red eyes costs you 100 points and the dark magician costs 0 points. Cabbage, if you want to play everyone’s favorite cockroach (Maxx “C”), each copy will cost you 50 points. This creates an interesting balancing act while building your deck.

In addition, we have a word from creators of content favored by Konami including Dzeeff and Ruggles who have shared that the values of the points will be updated fairly regularly. Ruggles also says he believes it will happen monthly (Joshua Schmidt mentions that the team was discussing monthly or bimonthly updates).

Honestly, at least for the first months, this will probably be necessary as it currently seems quite arbitrary regarding the values for some cards. For example, why is the wall Koa’ki Meiru worth a few points? Why does the avidity pot costs 30 but the prosperity pot is worth 40? If Konami supports Genesys, it could be enormous, especially for the most random duels.

In essence, Genesys looks like a low -power format that will allow many duels to find potentially more success with their pet decks. Hypothetically, this will also be less complicated by allowing new players to learn more easily the game before advanced to the advanced format. This is actually an intelligent Konami move.

Now, on the positive side, we know that Konami plans to support Genesys at least for a while. They have already announced that Genesys will be a secondary event in four outgoing YCS events (Anaheim, Sao Paulo, Pittsburgh and Merida). In addition, they will have a North American YCS Genesys (Genesys will be the main event) in 2026! In reality they are trying to support this that is exciting!

If Konami really thought, they would listen to the “7x YCS Champion” Ruxin34 (note the sarcasm for the meme) and do two things to help Genesys. First of all, they will bring Genesys a Duel Master And not just as a limited time event.

They must add it as a game mode. This would be really good for Duel Master Since there is no significant updates from the launch and many people are simply not playing it. In addition, it would give everyone the good chances of practicing and developing their decks.

Secondly, some specific products for Genesys will release. They could reuse the reprint sets to be actually oriented towards Genesys and if they do things in the right way with the distribution of rarity to help collectors, they could actually see some products sell!

I am personally enthusiastic about Yu-Gi-Oh! Genesys. I am very interested in seeing what people do in this format and how Konami regulates the point system. I know that Konami has a recent story of starting the fans and this does not erase these problems.

However, this does not remove this really good announcement of a new format that has the potential to bring fresh air into the game. Let me know your thoughts and hopes for the new Genesys format below.
