James Gunn breathes more easily after the success of Superman’s box office, admits that the stakes were high

“I have a strange way to get closer to work. When I work, when I am turning or writing, I don’t really feel pressure: I am having fun, this is my relief valve.

“This is once relieved for me. But then outside of this, yes, I heard a lot of pressure. I mean, there was many rides on this.”

Gunn stressed that the pressure did not only concern box office numbers or reviews, but rather the responsibility he felt against the entire creative team behind the film. He explained:

“When I hear the pressure, the first pressure is from all the people who worked on this film: the Department leaders and the actors who believe it so much and Peter Safran, have believed so much in this project.

“From the beginning, everyone was only with all my heart, 100% and if it comes out and it is a crap, this only sucks.”

The stakes extended beyond SupermanWith Gunn talks about how the success of the film would have a direct impact on the wider DC universe and other projects already in motion:

“In addition, we have Craig Gillespie who works on Supergirl, Chris, Damon and Tom who work on Lanterns and James with Clayface, so there are all these other people, who work on these other projects that could have been strengthened or hindered by this film and thank God, have all been strengthened by it.”
