With Superman inaugurate James GunnThe new DC universe, the next wave of DCU films is already attracting attention, above all Clay. That film is directed by The woman in black director James Watkins with White lines actor Tom Rhys Harries Set on Star.
This is preparing to be a great tonal change for the DCU. According to Nexus Point News, Harries is playing Matt Hagen, but this is not your standard comic. The film will found elements of multiple incarnations by Clayface, which specifically combine Hagen with the origin of Basil Karlo.
It has been reported that “Hagen is a beautiful and emerging actor who has attacked and disfigured. Originally from Gotham, he moves to Hollywood to escape his troubled past and start a career as an actor. With his defective, his career and his outlet as an actor are ruined and in the end he is transformed into a muthershifting monster.”
This version of Clayface dives directly into the horror territory of the body. The transformation from the actor in difficulty to the tragic monster seems to be the backbone of what Watkins is making … a horror story with a broken soul in the center.
One of the most surprising updates is the introduction of a brand new character, Dr. Caitlin Bates. According to the report:
“Bates is the CEO of a biotechnological startup that tries to create cutting -edge medicine and medical technologies. Bates sees Hagen as a way to grow his company and take care of his condition.
“Throughout the trial he falls in love with him while his boyfriend John becomes suspicious of their relationship. John is a detective and undertakes to Caitlin and his work. The film’s antagonist is destined to be a boss of the crime, which like Caitlin and John, is another original character.”
Clayface is described as a “horror film led by the character” full of original characters, which is an interesting move in a heavy universe in franchising, but which could give this story the creative freedom it needs.
Gunn said about the film: “[It’s] Pure fucking horror, as, totally real. Their version of that film is so real, true, psychological and horror of the body and gross. “
If DC wants to carve out a space for the stories of origin of the villain with depth and terror, it seems a good start.
The production should begin this autumn, with a theatrical release set for September 11, 2026.
