“With the work completed in season 2 and before any significant work starts season 3, now it is the right time for me to pass my complete focus to Naughty Dog and his future projects, including the writing and direction of our exciting, intergalactic game: the heretic prophet, together with my responsibilities as the head of the study and creative head.”

Druckmann added: “Co-coat of the show was a salient moment of his career. It was an honor to work alongside Craig Mazin to produce, direct and write managers in the last two seasons.

“With great care and consideration, I decided to take a step back from my daily work on The Last of Us to do space for what will come later,” said Gross on Instagram.

“I am so grateful to how special this experience has been. Working alongside Neil, Craig, HBO and this extraordinary cast and crew have changed their lives. The stories we have told – on love, loss and what it means human being in a terrifying world – are exactly the reason why I love this franchise.

The exits of Druckmann and Gross mark a great round behind the scenes, in particular with the third season just announced in April. While both will still bring credits for executive producers, the daily creative reins now fall more fully to the co-creator Craig Mazin.

“It was a creative dream to work with Neil and give life to his brilliant work on the HBO,” Mazin said. “I couldn’t have asked for a more generous creative partner.

“As a true fan of the work of Naughty Dog and Neil in video games, I am enthusiastic about playing his next game. While concentrating on this, I will continue to work with our brilliant cast and crew to deliver the show that our audience has expected.
