Co-Coifie DC Studios James Gunn It is not foreign to the Marvel universe, having played an important role in modeling him with his Guardians of the galaxy trilogy. But now, while building DC’s cinematographic future, Gunn is reflecting on where things could have gone crooked for Marvel and does not think it is completely their fault.
While Marvel was criticized for the public flooded with content, Gunn offered a more inclusive socket during a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
“I don’t even know if it’s really their fault,” said Gunn, adding that a Marvel manager has privately admitted to “put too many things out”.
When he was asked if Disney was behind the push, Gunn did not chop the words: “It wasn’t right. It wasn’t right. And he killed them.”
The wave of content of Marvel was not just a matter of creative enthusiasm, we all know that it was guided by companies. Like the head of the Marvel streaming Brad Winderbaum Previously, Disney’s mandate was clear: “It creates as much as possible for Disney Plus as quickly as possible”.
The results were at the best of irregular hypotheses, leading to franchising fatigue and overwhelming returns to the box office, also for projects that may have managed with more space to breathe.
But Gunn has no intention of repeating those mistakes in the DC studios. He said: “We do not have the mandate that we have a certain amount of films and TV programs every year.
“So we will publish everything we think is of the highest quality. Obviously we will do some good things and some not so good things, but we hope on average that everything will be as high quality as possible.”
He also clarified that nothing gets green light without his personal approval stamp: “Nothing goes before there is a script that I am personally happy.”
The wonder, for its part, seems recalibration. Disney CEO Bob Iger has publicly embraced an approach of “quality compared to the quantity” and with The Fantastic Four: First Steps Set to guide the charge this summer, there is a cautious optimism for a return to form.
In the meantime, Gunn’s DC universe starts this July with Supermanfollowed by Pacifier Season 2. After that, it will be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026.
