Here is a fun short film to look at today, a dark comedy entitled Tragedywhich is described as “how Fargo meets the strange of the body, but with great grace and reference to the films of the 80s and 90s, or series as as as Fantastic storiesOR Tales from the Crypt. “
The film comes from the director Gastón Haag and is shared in collaboration with the filmquest Film Festival, where we are trying to exhibit some of the films and the briskly radical indie shorts that the filmmakers are creating.
I also included an interview with the director you can read below!and his themes. It is a proof of the concept,
What was the inspiration for your movie? How did you come the idea?
The inspiration came from a news that I read in a very ridiculous newspaper of a man who found an alien in an apartment and seeing him similar to a person who was his partner, he fell in love. Although the short film does not concern this, it is based on the crazy idea of aliens masked by humans, in a ridiculous and fun environment.
Tell us about you. What is your background? How long have you been a director?
I currently live in Bilbao, a Basque country, I am a director who has always been interested in humor and absurd genre, so I decided to mix these things. This year I previewed a series on Latin American Disney Plus and the dark channel in Spain entitled “There is something in the forest” is a very retro and vintage anthology, with aliens, killer cars, werewolves, many animatronic and latex.
I was also in Sitges with this series and with previous shorts such as Superjodidos, or Nada de Nada, humor and offal comedies. I am currently trying to close my next project, which are two films, the short “Superjodidos” and another horror film called Laboratorio 70.
What inspires you to work within gender cinema and tell this type of stories?
I think that making stories that are far from my daily life is what keeps me alive in some way, I like to play and these stories allow me to do it, enter the impossible worlds and make them real. I really like the characters and creating scenes for them, and I have always been a fan of Latex, Blood and Amiatronics. I am very inspired by music, sometimes it takes me to think about the scenes or to watch movies that make me want to tell stories, I also like to observe everything that happens around me and from there looking for “What IFS”
What was your favorite part of the film process for this project?
What I liked most of this process was to work with talented people, who knew they would improve my vision, the costumes were incredible, I liked to work with Alaia Arde, or for example the artistic department or my photo director Ernesto Baez, I think it is a talent of export, it is really a genius.
But something that I also added to this, because in addition to being a director I am an actor, he was playing with the actors that I convened this story, when I act for me this is a role -playing game that I invite people to play together and this is what I enjoy and I like teamwork.
What are you most proud of this movie?
What makes me more proud of this short film is that it turned out to be exactly as I imagined, or rather, I would say better thanks to the people with whom I was able to work, without them it is impossible.
What is a favorite story or a moment from the making of the film you would like to share?
I have several favorite moments from this short, but I see the “aliens” with their acting, because more than FX we played on the body of the actors, seeing that their talent and the way they generated sensations only with their physicality and without much effect more than contact lenses. It was undoubtedly one of my favorite moments, as well as the death of my character, I like to die in the stories, I find it fun.
What was your most demanding moment or experience you had while you shoot your movie?
I think the biggest challenge of this short film was to make on 1 and a half days, very little time for many shots.
In this case, how has your film changed or deferred by its original concept during pre-production, production and/or post-production? How did the way you approach future projects as a result?
The short change in many aspects, one was the sound that although I had an idea in my head, the work with the sound of sound in post production was very fun and very beautiful. Even the editing of Iñigo, the publisher, who added some things that gave another turning point to my original idea.
The only thing that lacks that he had no more budget to make the aliens explode the heads of the bullies, that idea was left on site, was only something that would have given the necessary blood touch. So in future projects, just as I have been able to do in the old projects, I will always look for budget so that Gore is a part that is not lacking. Fortunately, in other projects I was able to obtain the impulse.
Who were some of your collaborators and actors of the film? How did you start working with each other?
The actors of this short film are all incredible, I was lucky to be able to work with the people I imagined in the script from the beginning, some with whom I had already worked before those who have a lot of talent and admire a lot, as in the case of Lander Otaola one of the Huamoid Alines or Jordi Aguilar, the main Thug. But then I was lucky enough to get the impulse to call two actors with whom I had not worked before, but that I had tried, as in the case of the great talented Goize Blanco, or the other talent of talented Aimar Vega.
What is the best advice you have ever received as director and what would you mean to the new filmmakers?
For me, the best advice I received is to always try to do something that I would like to see, to do something that would show me a film or a festival, as well as thinking about a story that the public would like. If it comes from within you and you are motivated and you like it, I think someone will always like it and you will be able to convey to them that genuine thing that led you to write the story.
Another advice is that, please, think of the characters and by always their importance, the films that I like most are always those in which the characters are well presented and everyone has their moment.
What are your plans for your career and what do you hope that this film does for this? What kind of stories would you like to tell going on?
Now my plan is to be able to film some of my cinematographic projects that I have in hand like Superjodidos, laboratory 70 or Sumo de robot, a movie that I would really like to see made made and see if people like these stories, I think they will have fun and hope you are amazed, because they are crazy and very funny.
With the tragedy, what I hope is that I open my doors to be able to carry out these projects in the future. For me, the stories that I like to tell are those in which the most important thing is the characters. I think it is nice to explore individuals and themselves, put us in extreme situations and play with possible scenarios that can arise in situations, ridiculous or fun, as well as terrifying and dangerous. I like all the films, but I like to make funny ones, those who bring you a little out of your routine and make you have fun.
What is your next project and when can we expect to see it?
I hope my future project is “superfucked”, a film in which in a world of violence, it becomes fashionable to become a superhero, or rather a vigilante, in order to stand out in society, and I focus on a group of misfits that do it. To follow the majority, but meet only to launch to criticize others, until something happens and they are forced to demonstrate their value.
I think talking about characters you lose and how forgiveness is important, because it is what happens mainly in our lives, we are not winning all the good moments always and we do not learn much from that. Instead of losing and something that goes wrong, that’s where you learn. For a long time, the cinema concerned the stories of winners, I have always liked losers and secondary characters of which nobody cared very much. I hope to be able to film it in 2025 and will be released in 2026.
