Pixar is not foreign to pull the emotional strings and break the visual soil, but with HeliumThe study is doing something a little more unexpected. Yes, it is a sincere story of a foreign boy who is swept away in an intergalactic misadventure.
But, behind the vibrant entertainment and fascinating alien creatures, the film actually borrows the visual inspiration from the film as Steven Spielberg’S And, Close meetings of the third typeAND John Carpenter’S Thing.
During a first day of the print for Heliumdirectors Domee Shi (Becoming red) AND Madeline Sharafian I revealed that they did not simply look for the hot and blurred side of Spielberg for reference. They also went to the dark corners of science fiction cinema, pulling vibrations from Ridley Scott’S Alien AND Thing. Sharafian said:
“I was really excited to collaborate with our DPS, Derrick Williams and Jordan Rempel to immerse yourself in the aesthetics of Spielbergian science fiction films, such as et, close encounters and some of the most types of frightening such as Alien and The Thing.
“We observed them with a fine -toothed comb for the visual appearance, which gave Jordan a lot to work. So we made this type of darker and deeper shadows.”
While nobody is devoured by a monster that moves the shape here, the influence is clear in the atmosphere of helium. From the movie we saw in the trailers, you can identify the soft and misty glow of sources of night light: something from Sharafian was particularly happy.
“One of my favorite things is the atmosphere, in which you will sometimes watch a Spielberg movie and there is a fog in the room and you are like” why is there a fog in Elliot’s bedroom? I do not understand. “
“There is something about it, that dream, really excited us, and it is the way you feel, not what is real in a film. This is what excites me about animation, and I am really happy with the way things went. It was really fun as a grandfather.”
But beyond the fog and moonotic lighting, the filmmakers pushed for a truly cinematographic aspect, also using virtual anamorphic lenses in animated production. Sharafian explained:
“We shot the film with a lens anamorphic, which I know is an animated film, but we use real cameras in the same way that it would make a live movie.
“So you will see small touches. There is a red ring around a light that could shine right against you. This is all for the film fanatics.”
This could very well be one of the most aesthetically ambitious studies and opens in cinemas on June 20, 2025.
