Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will be shot in IMAX that no movies made before

If you’ve ever sat in a real IMAX theater to watch movies like The dark knight, Dune: Second partOR Oppenheimer And he thought: “Why can’t the whole film look like this?” You are not alone.

For decades, the directors only used the massive 1.43: 1 of IMAX for selected sequences. The cameras were too voluminous, too noisy and too little practical to roll for an entire feature, in particular one with many dialogues.

But Nolan, never one to retire from a technical challenge, asked Imax to rethink everything. And they did it. The CEO of IMAX Rich Gelfond revealed to Cannes this week:

“Chris called me and said that if you can understand how to solve the problems, we will do [The Odyssey] 100 percent in Imax. And that’s what we are doing. He forced us to rethink that side of our business, our film recorders, our film cameras. “

What has come out of that collaboration is a series of smaller and substantially lighter IMAX cameras, according to 30% more silent than their predecessors. These new models are used right now to film The odysseymaking it the first great success of Hollywood to be shot entirely in the format of the IMAX 1.43 film: 1 native.

To put this in perspective, while many films advertise as I shoot for IMAX, most of them use digital IMAX cameras that do not fill the whole screen in an IMAX theater. Other Mix films of formats, jumping between Widescreen and the IMAX chassis in Torrenta and Torrente.

Nolan was one of the pioneers of that technique, using it before The dark knight. But now it is pushing the format into a completely new territory.

And will not stop with The odyssey. Once Nolan envelops production, these new cameras will be available for other filmmakers. This means that this moment is not just a milestone, it will mark the beginning of a new wave in the visual cinematographic narrative.

What does this mean for spectators? If you are lucky enough to live near one of the few real IMAX theaters that can project in 1.43: 1, you will want to plan in advance because those they show will surely be exhausted.
