Tony Gilroy reflects on Andor’s passage from the five -seasons plan: “We had no idea what we were going to enter”

When Andor It was invented for the first time, the idea was to create a centers of five seasons that tells the transformation of Cassian Andor into a key rebellious figure. But while the show started, creator Tony Gilroy It quickly realized that ambition had a limit, and perhaps it was for the best.

“We had no idea what we were entering when we started. We didn’t really know,” Gilroy admitted in a recent conversation with Gamesradar+. “I mean, it’s as if you said that you will walk on the corner and take a soda, and you had to walk in a continent.”

The original five -seasons project was quietly demolished in favor of something more concentrated and much more manageable for the creative team.

Season 2, which will also serve as a conclusion of the series, is now structured around four key jumps. Each three-episode arch covers one year, essentially playing like four autonomous mini-films.

Gilroy calls this pivot “born from necessity”, explaining, “we were suddenly realizing how much we should have done. We couldn’t do it physically. It would take too long.” Looking back, he has no regrets: “No, I wouldn’t want to do the five seasons”.

The renovated format has also become an opportunity for narration. “We realized that we had four sections we were doing and we were four years to cover, so a solution was very elegant. But then the question became: could you do those jumps without having a lot of exposure?”

To understand it, Gilroy and his team tested the structure by writing only the beginnings and ends of each arch. What started as a problem quickly turned into a creative thrill.

“It was really fun for the writers and for everyone,” he said. “What had been a problem for us became something very, very exciting … was energizing.”

The cast of the show also embraced the challenge. Stellan Skarsgårdwho plays the rebellious mind Luthen Rael, appreciated the freedom of the jumps of the time offered:

“I did not find it complicated … it’s, in a sense, to free you not have to explain continuously what is happening, in order to go to important things, it doesn’t matter if they are a year later or down.”
