The retro trailer of this week is for the 1977 horror movie Death bed: the bed that eatswho was directed by George Barry.
The bizarre film focuses on a demonic bed that consumes anyone on it. The story takes place through a surreal and dreamlike narrative, with a spectral narrator – pulled within a painting – observing and commenting on the gruesome history of the bed.
The bed, owned by a demonic force after a supernatural ritual went wrong, dissolves its victims in an acid similar to a stomach, leaving only their bones and objects behind.
The film sees various unsuspecting characters, including a trio of women and a mysterious man with a psychic connection with the bed, fall victim to his insatiable hunger.
The film was unknown for decades until it re -emerged in the early 2000s. Its influence extended to pop culture, in particular inspiring a comic reference in Patton Oswalt’s Stand-up routine. Although it is not a traditional horror film, its disturbing shows, experimental assembly and unconventional rhythm distinguish it as a unique strangeness in horror cinema.
