ALIEN: ROMULUS director explains he wants to “enter uncharted waters” with the franchise

Fede Alvarezthe director of the hit film Alien: Romulushas big plans for the iconic franchise. In a recent interview with Empire, Alvarez expressed his enthusiasm for the idea of breaking new ground and introducing audiences to something new in the world of cinema Alien universe.

When asked about his next film in the series, Alvarez said: “Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I’m working on it right now. We’re excited about where it can go.

“We’ve pretty much checked off all the things I want to see [in Romulus]and I brought back a lot of things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we may be entering uncharted waters.

“I think it’s going to be really exciting to bring the characters you know in this movie to a place in the Alien franchises we’ve never been to before and to discover things you’ve never seen before.

Alvarez’s comments seem to suggest that he is trying to move away from the franchise’s familiar themes and settings, and that he is trying to push boundaries while staying true to its legacy.

During a previous interview, Alvarez spoke about the sequel and said, “I think with sequels it’s always about finding the right story. Me and Rodo [Sayagues]my co-writer, we have some ideas, but it’s only when we find something that we say, “Okay, That it’s a film worth making” that we really embark on it.

“So that’s the process we’re in now, trying to find a story that’s worth everyone’s time and worthy of the title. Otherwise you never want to make the mistake of doing it [a sequel] just because the first one is a great success… [making a sequel] just because you Candies do it, it’s always a recipe for disaster.

As for what the story will entail, Alvarez said that the two main characters, who survived the first film, will be part of the next story.

“The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny AND David Jonssonwere the real highlights of the film. And so I’m always thinking about, ‘Wow, where do people want to see them go next?’

“We know there will be aliens. We know there will be great horror scenes. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”

He continued to tease where the story might go: “So once it was over, we started thinking, ‘What do you think will happen when or if they get to Yvaga? Will it be great? Or is it a terrible place?’

“We tend to believe that it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen.

“And then, after a few minutes, we say, ‘Oh, it feels like a sequel.’ But we really try to think about it more in terms of the story, whether it needs another chapter and whether people want to know what happens next.

I love that Alvarez is trying to do something new and different with the franchise, and it will be interesting and cool to see what that ultimately turns out to be.
