Sony Pictures appears to be pivoting its Marvel movie strategy, moving away from its struggling villain-driven universe to refocus on the Spider-Man Variants multiverse.
This new approach, if true, could breathe new life into the studio’s Marvel efforts after a series of disappointments, setbacks and bad films.
Sony’s attempts to build their own Marvel franchise outside of the MCU haven’t gone as well as they hoped. While the Poison The trilogy achieved commercial success, each installment facing declining box office returns and lukewarm reviews.
Less said Morbio, Kraven the HunterAND Mrs. Webthe better. These films, which aimed to spotlight Spider-Man villains, ended up as some of the biggest superhero movie flops. They crashed and burned.
The failure of Kraven the Hunter in particular it seems to have been the final nail in the coffin. It was previously reported that Sony is now moving away from its villain-centric formula to focus on projects involving Spider-Man.
Now, a new rumor shared by scooper @MyTimeToShineH claims that Sony’s future Marvel films will revolve solely around Spider-Man variants. Characters like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Punk, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man 2099 and even Kaine could take center stage, alongside the likes of Spider-Woman and other spider-themed heroes.
This change seems like it would be a better direction to take things. The Spider-Man multiverse has always been full of creative potential. Just look at Sony’s huge success Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and his sequel, as well as SSpider-Man: There’s no way to go home.
The studio could draw on these characters while leaving Peter Parker to thrive in the MCU under the leadership of Marvel Studios.
This strategy could also allow Sony to explore lesser-known heroes and villains without the pressure of trying to replicate the MCU’s massive success. However, without a solid creative team steering the ship, the same mistakes that have plagued the previous films could ruin this new direction.
They really need to figure out how to create great stories for the Marvel movies they make and that starts with hiring the right talent and having less interference from the studio because they don’t know what they’re doing. But they deny it and think they have made good films.
Outgoing Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra recently spoke out about the Marvel studio’s struggles, blaming critics for the poor reception, which is funny because no one cares what the critics have to say anymore.
When it comes to Kraven the HunterVinciquerra called it “probably the worst launch we’ve had in the last 7 1/2 years [I’ve been at Sony],” adding, “It didn’t work very well, which I still don’t understand, because the movie isn’t a bad movie.”
He also defended Mrs. Websaying, “The press just crucified him. It wasn’t a bad movie and did great on Netflix. Vinciquerra stated that the same fate befell the Poison film, arguing: “These are not terrible films. For some reason they were simply destroyed by critics in the press.
The fact is, these films need great storytelling that resonates with audiences. If Sony can execute this pivot effectively, the Spider-Verse approach could be a win for them!
The studio can explore a variety of Spider-Man inspired stories and that could keep audiences engaged. But the key to success depends on engaging the right creative teams to ensure these characters don’t meet the same fate as previously made films.
What do you think of this possible new direction for the studio?
