Christopher Nolan is known for his ambitious filmmaking, but also for his upcoming adaptation of Homer The Odyssey is set to become one of his biggest and most expensive film projects.
According to the Puck Newsletter, the film was given a whopping production budget of $250 million, making it one of the most expensive projects of his career.
This budget is in line with The Dark Knight Riseswhich reportedly cost the director between $250 and $300 million. In comparison, other similar Nolan hits Start ($160 million) and Interstellar ($165 million) seems almost modest.
For perspective, Nolan’s latest feature film, Oppenheimerit had a budget of $100 million, the same as his 2017 war epic Dunkirk. Only Principlewith its price tag of $205 million, it has already crossed the $200 million mark in Nolan’s filmography.
Nolan has assembled a top-notch cast for The Odessey which includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson AND Charlize Theron. Production is expected to begin in the first half of this year, although exact dates remain under wraps.
Universal Pictures describes the film as “a mythic action epic shot across the globe using brand-new IMAX technology.”
The story will follow Odysseus’ perilous journey home after the Trojan War, introducing audiences to legendary characters from Greek mythology such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the sea god Poseidon and the enchantress Calypso.
Universal obviously has a lot of faith in Nolan and this story, and producing a mythological epic of this scale was never going to be cheap.
With cutting-edge IMAX technology and a narrative rooted in one of history’s most enduring stories, The Odyssey is shaping up to be a huge cinematic event and with a budget of $250 million, it has to be a success.
The film is scheduled for release in July 2026.
