Martial arts legend Donnie Yen it’s not simply returning to the world of John Wick to reprise his role as the blind assassin Caine in the spin-off film, he might even direct it!
THE John Wick: Chapter 4 The star recently confirmed that he is in talks to direct a project centered around his character.
Speaking to Collider, Yen said: “It’s true. I think both the fans and the studio want that to happen, and we’ll see. I do not know. I can only tell you this. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We’ll see what happens.”
It would be great if Yen could step in and direct his own spin-off movie! I have no doubt he would make a badass action movie!
In John Wick: Chapter 4, Caine is forced to hunt down John Wick to protect his daughter, and it was one of the highlights of the story. The spin-off was first announced in May 2024 and will delve into the character’s complex history.
Yen has already directed films such as The legend of the wolf, Shanghai AffairsAND The Public Prosecutor. His potential role as both director and star could bring a unique and personal touch to the project, bringing his martial arts experience and cinematic vision to the film.
The project is developed by John Wick director and producer Chad Stahelskiwho is overseeing the expansion of the John Wick universe at Lionsgate.
The film will continue Caine’s story arc after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4. Caine was freed from his obligations to the High Table and there was a post-credits scene that teased the continuation of the story.
In the scene, Caine is shown stumbling into a town where he finds and hugs his daughter. Caine is still in danger, though, as Akira (Rina Sawayama), the former concierge at the Osaka Continental, has tracked him down and is brandishing a knife before the film cuts to black.
Caine killed Akira’s father, so she’s obviously out for revenge. I imagine the spin-off movie’s story will pick up from there.
Yen has already spoken about his experience with John Wick: chapter 4 calling it “extraordinary” and stated that “the reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like me, Chad, Basil and Erica are committed to creating action, fights and stunts that are not only exciting, creative and artistic , but also expressive of character, story and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past and I’m thrilled to return to the role.”
The screenplay was written by Robert Askins (The Umbrella Academy AND The Son) and will film in Hong Kong this year.
The fans of John Wick the universe is currently preparing Dancerthe next chapter in the franchise. The film, protagonist Ana de Armas as an assassin trained by Ruska Roma on a mission of revenge, is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 AND Chapter 4.
The star-studded cast includes Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Angelica Huston, Norman Reedusand the delay Lance Reddick in one of his last performances.
Dancer hits theaters on June 6, but the potential Yen spinoff is shaping up to be the next unmissable chapter in the expanding series John Wick universe.
