The first draft of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Describes Yoda as blue instead of his iconic green

Yoda and Grogu are iconic Star Wars characters of the same species, recognizable by their green hue and pointed ears, as well as their abilities with the force. They are wise and grow to be very ancient and powerful, and although their race is scattered across the galaxy, they are truly recognizable. But apparently their exact color wasn’t always set in stone.

In a new report from The Guardian (via SFFGazette.com), we learned this in an early script for The Empire strikes again scribes Leigh Brackett AND Lawrence KasdanYoda is described as follows:

“Mysteriously right in front of Luke is a strange bluish creature, no more than half a meter tall. The little shriveled thing is dressed in rags.

Early concept art also shows a Yoda portrayed in a blue hue, while a novel published alongside the film in 1980 also said he had “blue skin”. The original comic book adaptation of The Empire strikes again it also featured a blue, sometimes purplish Yoda.

The Guardian went straight to the source and tracked it down Nick Maleya special makeup and creature effects designer who worked on the Star Wars series, and revealed:

“When I first started working on it, it was green. I have a memory of a particular drawing. I seem to remember it being green in that drawing, and this was before we started trying to make it.

“All kinds of crap happens based on misunderstandings over the course of a large organization of different people doing different things along the way.”

It’s probably something as simple as the first makeup test looking greener once they did it and they liked it. Or maybe it was too blue with Yoda standing next to the Force Ghost version of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who appeared next to Yoda in The Empire strikes again AND Return of the Jedi.

Who knows? Whatever the cause, the rest is history, and Yoda and Grogu will remain green forever.
