When the The shadow of the Colossus the film adaptation was first announced, I was pretty excited about how it was going to look. It would be amazing to see this gaming masterpiece come to life on the big screen on an epic, grand scale.
But as the years passed without updates, I thought the project had quietly faded into oblivion. Now, after nearly 15 years of silence, there’s finally some hope thanks to a recent update from the director Andy Muschietti.
In a recent interview with Radio TUMuschietti confirmed that the film is not dead. He said: “The film has been in development for 10 years, and now the possibility of making it opens up.”
Muschietti added: “I’m not a great player, but The shadow of the Colossus It seems like a masterpiece to me and I’ve played it several times.”
The director then revealed that there is a complete script, saying: “There is a script that I really like, but there are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and the desire to make it, but with how popular it is an intellectual property”. so it is.”
While The shadow of the Colossus has a strong fan base, it’s still a niche title. Translating its disturbing and desolate world into a massive epic requires a studio willing to invest large sums of money.
Muschietti explained: «To make a good film there is a production company that puts the numbers and says how much it is worth giving the director 200, 150 or 100 million dollars. Obviously I want them to give me 200 million, but this is another factor to take into consideration.”
The road to this adaptation, first announced by Sony in 2009, was a long one. Fumito Uedathe creator of the game, would be involved. Then, Josh Trank (The Fantastic Four) took over as director in 2012, followed by Seth Lochhead (Hannah), who wrote a screenplay in 2013.
Muschietti became attached to the project in 2014, but so far there have been no updates on the matter.
The shadow of the Colossus follows Wander, a young man who ventures into an eerily deserted land to hunt down and destroy 16 towering behemoths. His goal? To resurrect Mono, a girl sacrificed for reasons shrouded in mystery.
The game’s minimalist narrative, breathtaking landscapes, and emotional depth have made it a timeless masterpiece.
It’s great that Muschietti is still attached to the film and is excited to make it. We’ll just have to wait and see if The shadow of the colossus will come to life as it deserves.
