Florence Pugh she is a talented actress who has captivated audiences with her performances in films such as Lady Macbeth AND Little Women. She recently opened up about the emotional toll of her art, revealing how her role in Midsommar pushed her to her limits.
She explained on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast: “There were some roles where I gave too much and was destroyed for a long time afterwards.”
Among these roles, her haunting performance as Dani in By Ari Aster Midsummerwhich is one of the most challenging experiences of his career.
In the popular horror film, Pugh plays a grieving woman who joins her boyfriend on a surreal trip to a Swedish festival, only to find herself caught up in a descent into terror, madness and violence.
The role required an intense level of emotional immersion, which left the actress struggling with the consequences. She admitted: “I definitely felt like I had abused myself in the places I managed to go.”
Reflecting on the experience, Pugh revealed how she learned to set boundaries for her mental health. “The nature of figuring these things out is that you have to say, ‘Okay, well, I can’t do this again because it would be too much.
“But then I look at that performance and I’m really proud of what I did, and I’m proud of what came out of me. I don’t regret it. But yes, there are definitely things you have to respect about yourself.”
This isn’t the first time Pugh has spoken out about the challenges of Midsummer. In an interview with the Sunday Times, he spoke about the extreme techniques he used to embody Dani’s pain, imagining harrowing scenarios involving her loved ones.
She described the idea of ”family members in coffins, going to an open casket funeral for my brothers”, which often left her hyperventilating on set.
Even after she finished filming, the emotional residue of the character remained with her. Pugh recalled the difficulty of letting go, saying, “When I did it, I was so into her. I’d never played someone in so much pain before, and I’d put myself in really shitty situations that maybe other actors haven’t need to do it.”
Despite the price Pugh paid, his performance improved Midsummer It’s one of the strongest I’ve ever produced. While she’s proud of her contributions to the role, it’s also something she never wants to experience again.
