This has been reported Luca Guadagnino is set to direct a American psycho reboot starring Austin Butler as Patrick Bateman. But second Bret Easton Ellisthe author of the novel on which the iconic 2000 film was based, there is no truth to this news, at least for now.
Speaking on Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast, Ellis debunked the reboot rebot, calling it “fake news.” He explained: “I have a feeling it’s fake news. I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts.
“Austin Butler didn’t sign anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca [Guadagnino] he doesn’t have an agreement. Scott Burns, who is expected to write the screenplay, also doesn’t have a deal.
Ellis went on to clarify that, based on his sources, “this is just fake news that was put out to see how the public will react.”
The original American psychodirected by Maria Harron and interpreted Cristiano Ballais a cult film, making the idea of a reboot a divisive proposition. While some fans are interested in Guadagnino’s idea (Call me by your name, Bones and all) reinterpreting the story, others wonder if a remake is necessary.
Ellis went on to reveal that he has not been involved in any negotiations about the potential project. He said: “I have nothing to do with this. I might make some money if they do it, but I’m not involved creatively on any level, and that’s all I know.
Hollywood is known to launch unconfirmed projects as a way to test the waters, and with the popularity of American psychoIt wouldn’t be surprising if the buzz around a reboot served as a test run for potential success.
We’ll just have to wait and see what’s happening with this potential film project.
