“What’s in the box?!” WELL, View director David Fincher actually answered that question in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
In the climactic scene at the end of the film, Brad PittDetective Mills demands to know what’s in a box delivered to him on orders of Kevin Spaceyis the evil John Doe, who Morgan FreemannSomerset opens.
Now, we never see it, but it’s clear that that’s the severed head of the inside the box Gwyneth PaltrowTracy’s character.
The box is said to have contained a prosthetic of Paltrow’s head, or entire body, created and then cut from the film.
When this was brought up to Fincher in the interview, he responded: “No, that’s completely ridiculous. I think we had a seven- or eight-pound shooting bag.
“We had done some research to understand, if Gwyneth Paltrow’s body mass index was X, what part of it would be attributable to her head. And so we had an idea of how much it would weigh, and I think there was a weight to that.
He added: “And we put a wig in there, so that when Morgan opens the box if there was some of this tape that was used to seal the box – I think it was a bag and a wig, and I think the wig contained some blood, so some hair would remain attached.
“Remember, I think Morgan opened 16 or 17 of those things. But as I always say, you don’t need to see what’s in the box if you have Morgan Freeman.”
No, no, you don’t. That look on Freeman’s face is pretty damn creepy.
