Director Roberto Eggers has produced some fantastic atmospheric, historical and detailed horror films such as The witch AND The Lighthousethroughout his career, and with which he made another great film Nosferatu.
Although his disturbing reimagining of the classic silent vampire film was a hit with critics and audiences, Eggers recently revealed that he was working on developing a feature film Frankenstein film before making it Nosferatu.
However, his attempt to bring Mary ShelleyHis iconic life story ended in failure and, by his own admission, he “definitely sucked.”
In a candid interview with Conversations at Curzon, Eggers spoke of his brief attempt to tackle the story, describing it as an idea that simply didn’t take root.
“When my son was born, I had a subconscious need, I’m sure for that, but when I started writing, I thought, ‘Oh yeah, that’s why.’”
“But how did I start trying to do Frankensteinand after two weeks I thought, “There’s no way to do this, it’s impossible.” It definitely sucked.
Eggers is known for his meticulous attention to historical detail and his ability to create evocative narratives, and the idea of a Frankenstein story through Eggers’ vision seems to be fantastic!
But the director himself recognized that the project was not suitable for him. He said, “Sometimes you know you have a disaster.”
Eggers also expressed his excitement for Guillermo del Toro’s next adaptation of Frankensteinwhich will be released later this year, saying, “I’m excited to see what Guillermo does with it.”
Eggers also spoke about other projects that remain in limbo. One of them is a medieval film titled The Knightand said, “I read this on a plane a few months ago, and it’s definitely worth revisiting. He later acknowledged that his initial draft seemed “a little juvenile.”
I want to underline this Nosferatu it was a project Eggers had been working on for nearly a decade. Eggers first considered accepting him soon after his debut, The witchin 2015. However, it took him years to refine the script to bring it to a level he was happy with.
It would have been interesting to see what Eggers would have done with Frankenstein, but it’s one of those things we may never see.
