UVS Games and Wise Wizard Games were released a few months ago Star Trek: Starrealms. This game is designed for 2-4 players and is a competitive and combative deck builder.
The UVS team was kind enough to send me a copy Star Trek: Starrealms for review purposes, but all thoughts below are my own.
Get ready for warp speed! Star Realms combines deckbuilding with TCG-style combat. Acquire ships and bases, generate trade or combat, and defeat your opponents to reduce their authority to zero. Live long and prosper as the ultimate strategist.
Star Realms originally released in 2014 and I played the digital version a couple of times then. I want to make it clear that it’s been a long time and I haven’t played it much, so I can’t draw great comparisons between the original and Star Trek: Starrealms. If that’s what you’re hoping for, I’m sorry I can’t provide it. Your review is on another site.
Let’s talk about the basic gameplay. If you’ve ever played a deck builder like Power Rangers deck building game, Domainetc., you know the main gameplay. You start with around 10 cards in your deck and play cards that allow you to buy more cards for your deck, damage your opponent, and more.
It’s a simple concept that many players have appreciated for a long time. Star Trek: Starrealms continues to implement it quite well.
That’s right, this shouldn’t be that surprising, but Star Trek: Starrealms It appears to work identically to the original game. The art, names, and even some colors have changed, but everything else appears to be the same.
You have the Federation (blue), Klingons (red), Romulans (blue), and Dominion (yellow/purple). Like I said, I can’t make a great comparison to the original Star Realms AND Star Trek: Starrealmsbut a friend of mine who has played the original a lot more noted that there doesn’t seem to have been any significant rebalancing or adjustments to the game. Therefore, if you want to Star Trek reskin of a decent game from 10 years ago, give it a try!
If you are new to Star RealmsI want to highlight a few things. First, my 7 year old son wanted to play it with me and we played it at least three times. The game is recommended for ages 14 and up.
My 7 year old son was able to grasp the basic mechanics of Star Trek: Starrealms No problem. They don’t really understand the strategy of the game, but they know how to play and they legitimately beat me once.
This isn’t to say that the gameplay is bad, just to highlight how simple it can be and that you shouldn’t always take age suggestions for games very seriously. I think the gameplay of Star Trek: Starrealms It’s fun partly because it’s simple on the surface with a little more depth as you play.
I want to take a minute to talk about the components of the game. The cards are well made and have a nice feel. The box isn’t a bad size, although in all honesty it could be smaller.
The insert is very standard and uninspired. There is a single trench in the center that is slightly larger than the width of the cards that everything can fit into. In my opinion this could have been designed better to have a space for Authority tokens (victory points), maybe have a separate space for starting cards, etc.
The game also includes a paper mat for the main deck and shop. It’s nice because it has a glossary for the different icons which helps you remember it mid-game without looking at the rules.
I think a deluxe playmat might be made available, but for around $25, I guess we shouldn’t expect more than a paper playmat. If it didn’t have the iconography, however, it would surely be superfluous.
I like Star Trek: Starrealms? All right. It’s pretty fun and for someone who enjoys it Star TrekI like the little details, for example each card has a different graphic and an appropriate name which shows some attention to detail.
I just wish they had revisited some of the gameplay to make it a little more balanced and modern in some way. Unfortunately, right now I don’t feel like I’ve played it enough to really have those tips ready.
I wouldn’t delete it Star Trek: Starrealmsbut I want to acknowledge that this is just a reskin with no other value.
